New Jersey

New Jersey has gained an undeserved reputation for crowded conditions and pollution due to its past, but today New Jersey has become a true renaissance story. Although it still has a very dense population for its size, more people are moving to the suburbs and lessening the congestion of cities like Jersey City and Paterson.

New Jersey has always been highly industrialized, with the economy relying for years on petroleum products, chemicals and machinery manufacturing. Today this is being challenged by cleaner, more technological industries such as pharmaceuticals, biotech and electronics. About twenty percent of the state is farmland, providing tomatoes, peaches, vegetables and cranberries to eastern states.

New Jersey draws apartment hunters from all walks of life because it is one of the most ethnically diverse states in the U.S., with significant Muslim, Jewish, Asian, Black and Arab populations in cities like Newark, Trenton and Princeton.

Outdoor Attractions

Outdoor action abounds in New Jersey, although it isn't for the faint of heart. Nor'easters can dump several feet of snow on the northern coastal areas in the winter, and flooding isn’t uncommon in the spring and fall. If you relish winter sports, however, the ski resorts of the northern mountains are some of the most challenging in the east.

Atlantic City's boardwalk and beaches are hot spots for family tourism during the spring and summer. Seafood, amusement parks and swimming are all popular along the eighteen miles of Atlantic coastline, with Atlantic City being the jewel of the resort towns.

Colleges and Universities

There are nine state colleges in New Jersey, nineteen community colleges and three major research institutions, including the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey.

The most prestigious institutions are Rutgers and Princeton, both of which offer exceptional higher education programs and draw students from around the world. Princeton is a member of the elite Ivy League. Also located in New Jersey, due partly to the high Jewish population, are seven rabbinical schools.

Real Estate and Housing

When you begin looking for apartments to rent in New Jersey you will suffer "sticker shock." There's no way around paying a premium for apartments for rent here, where apartment rent is about 70% higher than in the rest of the company. Newark offers more selection and slightly lower prices, but there are no cheap housing areas. Part of this is due to the many upscale suburbs in New Jersey that house commuters working in Philadelphia and New York City. These bedroom communities drive up the cost of rent across New Jersey. If you do want to rent a New Jersey apartment, keep in mind that you may have the income working here to afford it – this state has the highest median income of all fifty states.
