Utah

Utah is filled with scenic grandeur, from vast expanses of red rock stone formations to deserts to snow-capped mountain peaks. The state is most known, however, for being the home of the Mormons (or LDS church). In fact, over 50% of the population of Utah is Mormon and the church has political and economic clout throughout the state.

Although mining – including gold, silver and lead – have always been important to the state, other industries are also important. Mineral excavation (including salt from the vast salt plains) and petroleum oil provide substantial revenue as well. But in the last few decades the greatest economic growth has been in the high tech sector, with biotech and aerospace both playing a key role. In fact, NASA does more research and testing here than in any other state, and much work for the space shuttle is done here.

Tourism is also important, with ski lodges and the natural beauty of canyons sculpted by the Colorado River bringing in millions every year. This is one of the most family friendly states to visit because of the restrictive liquor laws and the complete lack of gambling of any kind. Apartments in Salt Lake City or Provo are wonderful places to raise families.

Outdoor Attractions

If you love hiking and camping with an eye toward scenic beauty, you'll love Utah. The Rocky Mountains of Utah are some of the highest peaks in the U.S. and Arches National Park has breathtaking vistas of unusually sculpted rock formations in colors from deep red to soft sands. The mountains also provide ample challenges for even the most seasoned skier.

The Colorado River has numerous whitewater rafting courses and is full of freshwater fish. Boating and fishing are very popular in the River and the numerous lakes of Utah.

Colleges and Universities

The Utah State University system has twelve campuses in three regions, providing an excellent education with outstanding research facilities. The system has close ties with NASA, and sponsors several space research programs every year.

There are also several independent colleges and universities. The most famous of these is Brigham Young University, attended by young Mormons from around the world. The school provides apartments and various other types of housing for both married and single students.

Real Estate and Housing

Apartments rent for about 15% less than the national average in Utah, with most of the apartment choices in the Salt Lake City/Heber/St George area, where 70% of the state's population resides. More people are looking for apartments in Utah every year because of the low cost of living and low unemployment. Keep in mind when shopping for Utah apartments, however, that you do want to look in the cities – small towns in Utah typically are focused on permanent housing.
